- Day 1 - Saturday, November 21 - Natchitoches – Morning departure from Zachary and Baton Rouge, routing through Lafayette. After we arrive in Natchitoches, our first stop will be at St. Augustine Catholic Church and Cemetery, a historic Roman Catholic Church considered to be the cultural center of the Cane River's historic Creoles of color community. Established as a mission church in 1829, St. Augustine is celebrated as the first church in Louisiana to be built by and for free people of color. It is among the oldest churches founded and built by and for people of African descent in the United States.
This afternoon, we'll board the Cane River Queen for a river cruise to take in the sights and learn the history that makes Natchitoches a special place. Our included dinner will be at Merci Beaucoup's. Located in the historic district of Natchitoches, they offer original classic Cajun and American dishes and are known for their Cajun Potato (an incredible stuffed potato topped with crawfish etouffee and jumbo fried shrimp), along with meat pies, a Natchitoches staple. This evening, we gather on the riverwalk to see the Natchitoches Christmas Festival of Lights, with fireworks and more than 300,000 lights lit for the holiday season. Overnight in the Natchitoches area. (D)
Day 2 - Sunday, November 22 - Home – After an included breakfast, we make our way to Melrose Plantation, which dates back to 1796 and is a National Historic Landmark. Here, we'll see paintings by the renowned folk artist Clementine Hunter and learn her story. After an included lunch, we return home. (B,L)
