This tour involves moderate physical activity, including walking and exploration during attractions and scenic train rides. Note that Colorado's higher altitudes may affect you, so consult your doctor if you have concerns. - Day 1 - Tuesday, Sept. 17 - Wichita Falls, Texas – Early morning departure from Zachary and Baton Rouge. Our route is I-10 to Lafayette, I-49 through Alexandria and Natchitoches to Shreveport, 1-20 to Dallas. Overnight in Wichita Falls.
Day 2 - Wednesday, Sept. 18 - Santa Fe, NM – Through Amarillo, Texas to the Santa Fe, NM area for overnight.
Day 3 - Thursday, Sept. 19- Durango, Colorado – All day ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, one of the best railway experiences worldwide. America’s highest and longest narrow gauge railroad. Overnight in Durango.
Day 4 - Friday, Sept. 20 - Durango – Visit Mesa Verde National Park’s famous cliff dwellings. Durango overnight.
Day 5 - Saturday, Sept. 21 - Montrose, Colorado – This morning we board the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for our spectacular 3 ½ hour ride to Silverton, hugging the walls high above the Animas River Canyon. Overnight in Montrose.
Day 6 - Sunday, Sept. 22 - Frisco, Colorado – Morning journey over the Continental Divide and Monarch Pass to historic Leadville. Afternoon scenic train ride high in the mountains over the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Certainly a day in the midst of Colorado’s most breathtaking scenery. Overnight in Frisco.
Day 7 - Monday, Sept. 23 - Colorado Springs, Colorado – Brief sightseeing in Denver. On to Colorado Springs to visit the Air Force Academy. Overnight in Colorado Springs.
Day 8 - Monday, Sept. 24 - Colorado Springs, Colorado – Ride to the top of Pikes Peak, then visit the Garden of the Gods Park. Overnight in Colorado Springs.
Day 9 - Tuesday, Sept. 25 - Garden City, Kansas – Morning train ride through the Royal Gorge on the Royal Gorge Scenic Railway, billed as the “most scenic train ride in North America.” We will pass under the Royal Gorge Bridge,1200 ft. below the highest suspension bridge in the world, traveling along the raging Arkansas River. Overnight in Garden City area.
Day 10 - Wednesday, Sept. 26 - Ardmore, Oklahoma – Across Oklahoma to its capital, Oklahoma City, to visit the Oklahoma City Memorial. Overnight in Ardmore with dinner included at Two Frogs.
Day 11- Thursday, Sept. 27 - Home – Drive south into Texas and home this evening.
