Day 1 - Saturday, August 19 - Fairbanks, AK – Morning departure from Baton Rouge (or other departures) for Fairbanks, Alaska.
Day 2 - Sunday, August 20 - Fairbanks – Today we go to the town of North Pole and visit Santa Claus’ house. We tour historic downtown Fairbanks. Time for pictures and shopping. Day 3 - Monday, August 21 - Fairbanks – Fairbanks is the 2nd largest city in Alaska, and located in the heart of Alaska’s interior. Today we enjoy a fully narrated cruise on the authentic sternwheeler, Discovery III, along the Chena and Tanana rivers. See a bush pilot’s demonstration, watch a fish wheel in operation. Visit a replica of an Athabascan Indian Village and meet Susan Butcher’s famous Iditarod sled dog team.Visit Gold Dredge #8 and try our luck panning for gold. See the trans-Alaskan pipeline. Tonight enjoy the Alaskan Salmon Bake and Show. Day 4 - Tuesday, August 22 - Denali – Board the world famous Alaska Railroad and journey through untamed wilderness to Denali National Park, location of North America’s highest peak, 20,320 foot Mount McKinley. This afternoon is available for shopping or optional tours such as river rafting and flightseeing, or simply enjoy the beauty. Day 5 - Wednesday, August 23 - Denali – Today we will enjoy a full day tour into Denali National Park, led by a naturalist driver guide. Be on the lookout for grizzly, caribou, moose, wolves, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Day 6- Thursday, August 24- Anchorage – This morning we continue our exploration of Alaska as we motor coach to Anchorage. The first 150 miles provides us with the best opportunity to view Mt. McKinley. We stop along the way at Talkeetna, setting for Northern Exposure. Journey south and stop at Wasilla for a visit to Happy Trails Kennels, home of four-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser. See mushing demonstration. Day 7 - Friday, August 25- Anchorage - Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and began in 1915 along Ship Creek as a tent city. Today we enjoy one of the world’s most scenic drives, the south shore of lovely Turnagain Arm. Then, a spectacular mid-day cruise aboard the Klondike Express, a luxury catamaran, visiting the largest concentration of glaciers in Alaska – calm waters, wild sights, Prince William Sound and College Fjord. See towering glaciers in Harriman Fjord and watch for curious otters, whales and sea lions. Day 8 - Saturday, August 26 - Anchorage – Today we return to Turnagain Arm to view scenic areas and visit a wildlife rehabilitation center. We will visit Girdwood and then back to Anchorage, with time for downtown shopping. Day 9 - Sunday, August 27 - Anchorage – Morning visit to the Native Cultural Center. Afternoon visit to the Anchorage Museum of History & Art. More time for downtown shopping. Overnight flight back to Louisiana (or other home airports). Day 10 - Monday, August 28 - Home – Arrive home by mid-day. |
